Impact Snacks is a Boston-based company that produces plant-based superfood bars with compostable wrappers. Each snack bar's carbon footprint is tracked through a life cycle analysis, including harvest, production, packaging and shipping. Then, Impact Snacks reports to offset the production completely. According to the startup, of the 0.38 pounds of carbon produced by each bar, they reclaim 1 pound or 250% more than the original offset—making it a snack company that actually takes away more carbon than it produces.
Customers earn carbon credits with each purchase, and they can invest the credits into renewable energy projects, donate to nonprofits, or use to buy more sustainable products. Co-founder Corey Nobile notes:
In these experiences, people get to choose not only the bars they would like but also the impact they'd like to see in the world... We help them create, track, and share that positive impact so they can inspire others to do the same
Impact Snacks reports that they reclaim 250 percent of the carbon the company emits. They do this in two ways. The first approach is to "remove existing carbon from the atmosphere by sequestering it with trees and in different plants," Nobile tells Food Tank. To do this, they contribute to reforestation projects by partnering with the Eden Project in Madagascar and other efforts in Nepal and Columbia.
