Instagram is an American photo- and video-sharing social networking platform headquartered in Menlo Park, California. It also has offices in San Francisco and New York City. Instagram was founded in 2010 by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. It is reported that Instagram has more than 2 billion users worldwide. The company was acquired by Facebook in 2012 for $1 billion.
In September 2018, Instagram founders Systrom and Krieger resigned from the company. Adam Mosseri became the head executive of Instagram following the founders' departure. Mosseri has led efforts to make the platform a more positive space for users through "Project Daisy," which aims to curb bullying and encourage better mental health by hiding the "likes" count on users' publicly visible profiles.
Instagram is free and available for download on iOS and Android-based devices. It can be accessed by anyone over the age of thirteen by registering an email address and selecting a username. The platform is designed to be used to share photos and videos with friends and people who follow the user. Users can view others' posts and interact with those posts by commenting or liking the posts. Direct messages can be sent to other users to communicate, and Instagram allows for voice and audio calls through the platform.
Users can post different types of media on Instagram, including photos and videos in the form of "stories," which are temporary videos to show to a user's personal following, and "reels," which are videos meant to attract more followers. The company launched a long-form video-sharing app, IGTV, in 2018.
Instagram includes features to edit and customize photos and videos, such as the following:
- filters on videos and photos
- camera effects
- photo cropping and rotation
- hashtags for photos and videos
- location tagging on posts
