Internet Computer is a world computer blockchain designed to be able to build online systems, such as social networks, without technology traditionally used to build them, such as cloud computing systems. The blockchain consists of an ecosystem of various projects of decentralized applications (dApps) related to enterprise systems, decentralized finance (DeFi), non-fungible tokens (NFTs), messaging, and more. It was launched in 2021 with major contributions made by DFINITY Foundation.
The Internet Computer Protocol can be used to enable the decentralization of Web3 services, allowing developers to build services using smart contracts. This feature can be used on Web3 services that have already been built on other blockchains and replace the traditional technology used so the service then has decentralized data storage and processing.
The Internet Computer uses a reverse-gas model for its dApps, making them free for users and easily adopted by large amounts of users. The blockchain can be accessed by identification systems, such as fingerprints or FaceID. It does not track users' movements, and it is secured using cryptographic features.
The Internet Computer has a native token called Internet Computer (ICP) that can be purchased by users. It can be used to pay for goods and services on the blockchain, such as NFTs, and to pay entities that compute capacity for transactions. The token is also a governance token, meaning holders of ICP can stake it to have voting power in the decisions made about the blockchain.
