Invacare is a medical device and therapeutics manufacturer and seller. They are based in Elyria, Ohio and distribute medical devices worldwide.
Invacare traces their roots back to 1885 when the Worthington Company began producing a line of vehicles for people with physical disabilities. The Worthington Company grew and changed until they were purchased by Johnson & Johnson in the late 1970s, at that time part of a company known as Technicare. Johnson & Johnson decided to sell the wheelchair division known as Invacare.
A. Malachi Mixon III organized a small group of investors and purchased the Invacare division. Since that time, Invacare has developed products such as the split-spring bed, the microprocessor controlled power chair, their proprietary oxygen system and a gearless, brushless motor. Invacare has also grown through the acquisitions of Küschall, Carters, Poirier and Scandinavian Mobility.
Invacare has grown from three factories to thirty factories, over five thousand employees and net sales of $1.4 billion and listed on the NYSE.
