Ismail Merchant (1936-2005) was a film producer and director born in Mumbai when the country was under British Raj. After India gained independence, he became an Indian citizen. Merchant is best known for his association with Merchant Ivory Productions, a company he co-founded. He passed away in London in 2005.
Merchant was educated at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, later attending New York University and its Stern School of Business. It was at New York University where he began his career as a filmmaker, working as a film producer and film director.
One of the films directed by Ismail Merchant was The Proprietor. Through his work in the film industry, Merchant contributed significantly to the development and recognition of cinema.
