History
Atanas Figol, in an article about the university in the Encyclopedia of Ukrainian Studies, argued that since the beginning of the 20th century, the Poles, in order to emphasize the “Polishness” of the university, began to assert that it appeared in 1661 as the Jesuit Academy, founded by King Jan II Kazimierz from the Lviv Jesuit Collegium. But the decision of the king was not approved by the Diet. This statement was accepted without criticism in the USSR and other countries. According to other sources, the Lviv Academy with the rights of a university was founded in 1661 by the decree of King Jan II Casimir, who granted the Jesuit collegium in Lvov "the dignity of the academy and the title of the university." In 1773, the Jesuit order was banned, and the university was closed. Restored in 1784 under the name of Joseph University. In 1805-1817 - a lyceum. In 1817 it was re-established as the Franz I Universit Background
Former main university building (1851-1923)
According to the articles of the Gadyach Agreement (1658) between the Hetmanate and Poland, the Polish government promised to open two higher academies in the Hetmanate in the future: one in Kiev , and the second where there would be a suitable place for it. The academies were promised the same university rights enjoyed by the University of Cracow. Influential circles of the Commonwealth did not exclude the possibility that under the pressure of certain political circumstances Ukraine could form its own national universities. At the same time, the Jesuit order, in the cause of protecting Catholicism, placed special hopes on its cell in Lvov. Jesuitsappeared in Lvov at the end of the 16th century, and in 1608 they opened their secondary school-college here. By the middle of the 17th century, this collegium fell into decay, but nevertheless was saved by the Jesuits from destruction, since it enjoyed the care and support of the Polish magnat.
The Jesuits understood the possibility of creating a university on the basis of a fraternal school in Lviv, therefore they constantly sought to transform their collegium into an academy. After repeated petitions, King Jan II Casimir signed a diploma on January 20, 1661, which granted the Jesuit college in Lviv "the dignity of an academy and the title of a university" with the right to teach all the then university disciplines, to award academic degrees of bachelor, licentiate, master and doctor. However, immediately after the signing of the diploma, the creation of the academy met with strong opposition from the University of Krakow.and certain influential persons of the state, he was supported. Despite the obstacles, the teaching at the Lviv Academy was modeled on other European academies. And then the Polish king August III in 1758 approved the diploma dated January 20, 1661, issued by Jan II Casimir. The academy was closed in 1773.
From the moment of its foundation and until 1773 Lviv University was completely under the control of the Jesuit order and subordinated to the general of the Jesuits in Rome. The head of the university was the rector. The premises of the university were near Krakowska street in the center of Lviv. The educational institution built and bought new premises, had its own library, the largest printing house in Lviv.Ivan Franko University of Lviv
