Ivan Sutherland (born May 16, 1938) is an American computer scientist, programmer, and engineer. He was born in Hastings, Nebraska, and holds citizenship in the United States. Sutherland is known for founding Evans & Sutherland as well as Advanced Technology Ventures.
In terms of education, Sutherland attended several institutions during his career. He went to Scarsdale High School and later pursued higher education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), California Institute of Technology, and Carnegie Mellon University. Sutherland's doctoral advisor was Claude Shannon, a renowned mathematician and electrical engineer. He also advised several doctoral students, such as James H. Clark and Danny Cohen (engineer).
Throughout his career, Ivan Sutherland has earned a number of prestigious awards. In 1988, he received the Turing Award, which is often regarded as the highest distinction in computer science. Moreover, Sutherland was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2016.
