Ivanovo State University is a public higher education institution located in Ivanovo, Russia.
History
Ivanovo State University is the legal successor of the Ivanovo-Voznesensky Pedagogical Institute, which was established in the "red Manchester" in 1918. Initially, it consisted of only three faculties: socio-historical, physico-mathematical and natural (biological). The first rector of the university was Professor Sergey Nikolaevich Bogolyubsky, a zoologist by profession. Classes were held in a two-story building of the former men's gymnasium (currently it is the academic building of the Ivanovo Agricultural Academy in Semenovsky Lane).
Unfortunately, the pedagogical institute managed to make only one graduation in 1923, and at the same time it was transformed into a pedagogical college – a secondary specialized educational institution. This was due to an acute shortage of material resources for the maintenance of the university during the restoration of the economy, which suffered from the world and civil wars.
However, during the first five-year plans, the educational institution was restored to the status of a university due to the fact that the cultural revolution was unfolding in the country and teachers were urgently needed. In 1932, the university was revived after a nine-year break as part of the mathematical, physical and historical faculties. In 1938, the Faculty of Philology appeared, and in 1941 – the Faculty of Foreign Languages.
On December 29, 1973, the Council of Ministers of the USSR adopted a resolution on the transformation of the pedagogical Institute into Ivanovo State University. Its rector was appointed Doctor of Technical Sciences Vladimir Nikolaevich Latyshev, Vice–rector for Academic Affairs – Yu.M. Serov, Vice–rector for Scientific Work - R.P. Smirnov, and then - Yu.G. Yerykalov. The leading teachers of the university in the first years of its activity were professors N.P. Antonov, B.D. Babaev, V.M. Britov, V.I. Klopov, P.V. Kuprianovsky, V.S. Smirnov, G.K. Shkorbatov, etc.
New faculties have appeared in the structure of IvSU – law, Economics, Biology and Chemistry. The material base of the university was strengthened: in 1974, a new building was allocated to it, which received No. 4, it is still occupied by the Biology and Chemistry faculty. In 1977, the former building of the art school, which became Building No. 5, was transferred to the university. It was first mastered by lawyers and economists, then the history faculty joined them. In 2000, the ninth faculty of IvSU was opened – the socio-psychological faculty, which settled a year later in the academic building No. 7. And in 2015, the historical and economic faculties received a modern, spacious building No. 6.
At the beginning of the XXI century . The university gradually began to switch to a two-level system of training specialists. First, admission to the bachelor's degree at the Faculty of Mathematics was opened, then other structural units of the university followed his example. Over time, almost all faculties began to prepare masters. In 2012, Shuisky Pedagogical University became a branch of IvSU.
