James Jeffrey Ian Norton was born on July 18, 1985. He was born in London, in a family of teachers. Hugh Norton, the father of the future actor, was a native of Tanzania, but moved to Britain, taught at the school of art and design. The boy's mother, Lavinia, also devoted herself to teaching, but did not forget about the children: in addition to James, she also raised her daughter, who later became a doctor. Later, the family decided to move to the town of Malton, located in the county of North Yorkshire. James went to the local Catholic school. According to the future actor, his classmates bullied him, and one of the people who supported him during that difficult period was a priest who called himself Father Peter.
After graduating from high school, Norton went to Cambridge University College, where he studied theology. Religion played an important role in his life and in the future: and at some point the young man took up missionary work and went to Nepal, then to India to spread the Christian faith among the children there. During this period of his life, James was attracted to Buddhism, and he began to study the teachings of the Buddha. Tennis was also present in James' life. Later, the actor will say in an interview: Tennis is really mine, and I try to devote several days a week to it. Sport was not the only hobby of the future artist – he became interested in acting as a child.
At the age of 5, Norton played in a school play, and he really liked this experience. At the age of 15, James joined the stage and got into the theater founded by Stephen Joseph in Scarborough. While studying in college, the young man played in the student theater and spent more time on stage and behind the scenes than in classes. One of James' most striking works was the role of Postumus in the play "Cymbeline" based on Shakespeare. In the end, James chose the path of an actor and attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art for three years. There was very little time left before graduation, but in 2010 he abandoned his studies for the role, and never regretted his decision.
