Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (born 11 May 1827) was a French painter and sculptor. He was born in Valenciennes and held citizenship in France. Carpeaux was educated at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts and the French Academy in Rome. His occupation was primarily within the genre of portrait painting.
Some of Carpeaux's notable works include L'Amour à la folie, Young girl with a shell, Fontaine de l'Observatoire, The Dance (sculpture), Why Born Enslaved, Ugolino and his sons, and The Negress.
Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux passed away in Courbevoie on 12 October 1875. He was the child of Joseph Carpeaux and Adèle Wargny, and his own child was Charles Carpeaux.
