Jean-Louis Forain - French artist, graphic artist, book illustrator.
From a family of weavers. In 1860 he came to Paris with his parents. He started his career as a cartoonist. He has worked for several Parisian magazines, including Le Monde Parisien and Le rire satirique. Later he studied at the Higher School of Fine Arts with Karpo and Jerome. Participated in the Franco-Prussian War. He was friends with Verlaine and Rimbaud, Monet, Manet and Degas. He exhibited several times with the Impressionists (in 1879, 1880, 1881 and 1886). He was the youngest artist who often visited and took part in debates led by Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas in the cafe "New Athens". The first personal exhibition took place in 1890 at the Theo van Gogh Gallery.
