She was born March 3, 1982, in the small American town of Ely, Minnesota, to the family of businessman Jonathan Edward Biel and Kimberly Biel.
Three years later, the family had a son, Justin. During her childhood, Jessica and her family lived in Texas, Connecticut, and Woodstock, Illinois. Eventually the family settled in Boulder, Colorado.
Initially, Jessica studied singing and even participated in several city music projects, appearing in leading roles in musicals such as Annie, The Sound of Music, and Beauty and the Beast. At the age of 12 she participated in the International Association of Models and Talents conference, where she was noticed and invited by a modeling agency. From this time Jessica began modeling for print advertisements and began appearing in commercials (including Deluxe Paint and Pringles brands).

Her first film role was the role of a rebellious goth, Casey Jackson, granddaughter of Peter Fonda, in the critically acclaimed drama "Uli Gold" (1997). This role earned her a Young Artist Award.
A breakthrough for Jessica was the role of Sophie, the lover of Edward Norton's character in The Illusionist (directed by Neil Burger, 2006), for which she won two awards.
Jessica was Nicolas Cage's partner in The Prophet (2007). On September 8, 2008, she attended the international premiere of "Easy-Breezy" at the Toronto International Film Festival, in which she starred alongside Ben Barnes, Kristin Scott Thomas and Colin Firth.
