John Desmond Bernal (1901-1971) was a physicist and philosopher born in Nenagh. He held United Kingdom citizenship and was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Bernal's academic career included mentoring doctoral students Max Perutz and Dorothy Hodgkin. His own doctoral advisor was William Henry Bragg. Bernal died in Camden Town in 1971.
