John Hasbrouck Van Vleck

John Hasbrouck Van Vleck (March 13, 1899 – October 27, 1980) was an American mathematician and physicist . He was born in Middletown, Connecticut, and held citizenship in the United States . Van Vleck studied at Harvard University, where he later completed his doctoral degree under the supervision of Edwin C. Kemble .

During his career, Van Vleck made contributions to both the fields of mathematics and physics . Some of his notable doctoral students include Harvey Brooks, a physicist, and Philip Warren Anderson, both of whom he advised .

Van Vleck passed away on October 27, 1980, in Cambridge, Massachusetts .
