John Masefield was born in Ledbury, Herefordshire. At a young age, he joined the navy, and went to America as a sailor. In 1897 he returned to England and began to study journalism. He publishes several poetry collections about the life of sailors, in particular "Sea Ballads" and "Ballads".
In 1911, Masefield published the poem "Eternal Mercy", in which he ironically describes the conversion of Saul Kane, a rowdy and drunkard, to religion.
