John Walter (1738-1812) was a British journalist and publisher, who founded The Times newspaper. He was born in London on January 1, 1738 and held British citizenship from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Walter was educated at the Merchant Taylors' School, Northwood. Throughout his career, he worked primarily as a journalist and eventually became a publisher.
He had two known children, a son named John Walter, born in 1776, who also became an editor, and a daughter named Mary Walter. John Walter passed away on November 16, 1812, in London.
