Kirov - aka Khlynov, aka Vyatka
Kirov is located in the foothills of the Urals on the banks of the large Russian Vyatka River, belonging to the Volga basin. Kirov Region belongs to the Volga Federal District.
It is separated from Moscow by a distance of about 900 kilometers. The nearest major cities are Nizhny Novgorod, Perm and Kazan. Kirov is connected by good transport links with many regions of Russia.
There is a federal highway "Vyatka", there is a railway and river connection and the airport "Pobedilovo". The flight from Moscow to Kirov will take a little more than 2 hours.
To understand where Kirov is located, you need to take the direction to the northeast from Moscow. The Kirov region borders with the Nizhny Novgorod, Kostroma, Vologda, Arkhangelsk regions, Perm Krai, the republics of Komi, Mari El, Tatarstan and Udmurtia.
As of 2017, the population of Kirov exceeds 520 thousand people and continues to increase.
The city was founded by Novgorodians in the XII century and named Vyatka after the river. In the XV century, a wooden fortification of Khlynov was built here and for several centuries the city was called that.
Under Catherine the Great, the city regained its former name - Vyatka. The city became Kirov in 1934 in honor of the prominent revolutionary and party leader S. M. Kirov.
Since the summer of 1941, during the war, many industrial enterprises were evacuated to Kirov, which continued to work here in the post-war years. This gave the city a powerful impetus to development.
At one time, the city was closed to foreign visitors as an important strategic object. Now anyone can become a guest of Kirov.
