Kolena Inc. is a startup developing a machine learning (ML) platform with tools for testing, benchmarking, and validating the performance of artificial intelligence (AI) models. Kolena offers a "model quality framework" to deliver unit and end-to-end testing for AI models, in a customizable, enterprise package. The platform provides gaps in test data coverage while incorporating risk management features to track risks associated with deployment. Kolena's solutions have been adopted by several Fortune 500 companies, AI startups, government organizations, and European AI standardization institutes.
Kolena aims to uncover hidden model behaviors to evaluate models, understand and track behavior improvements or regressions, better communicate model capabilities, and automate model testing and deployment workflows. The platform organizes test data, stores and visualizes model evaluations, and provides tooling to improve testing. Users can access Kolena through the company's web portal or via a Python client.
Kolena can be customized depending on workflows, data types, evaluation logic, metrics, plots, and reports. Common examples include the following:
- Computer vision—object detection, instance/semantic segmentation, facial recognition, depth estimation, and binary/multi-class classification
- Natural language processing—text classification, sentiment analysis, question answering, translation, summarization, conversational, text generation, and sentence similarity
- Audio—text-to-speech, automatic speech recognition, audio-to-audio, audio classification, and voice activity detection
- Multimodal—text-to-image, image-to-text, video search, and document question-answering
Based in San Francisco, Kolena was founded in 2021 by Mohamed Elgendy (CEO), Andrew Shi (CTO), and Gordon Hart (CPO). The trio had previously worked together for around six years within AI divisions at Amazon, Palantir, Rakuten, and Synapse. The company has raised a total of $21 million in funding, including a $15 million round in September 2023 led by Lobby Capital with participation from SignalFire and Bloomberg Beta.
