Historians date the first written mention of Komarno to 1471. Scientific excavations in 1936 show that settlements in the modern city have existed since the end of the third millennium BC, as evidenced by the discovery of Stone Age archaeological finds.

The Russians built a town with a castle on Bald Mountain in princely times. This castle was part of the Zvenigorod principality and ceased to exist during the Tatar-Mongol invasion in 1240.
Researchers suspect that the name of the city is most likely from mosquitoes, of which there were many due to the fact that the surrounding area was swampy.
