Krasnoyarsk is the largest business, industrial and cultural center of Eastern Siberia, the capital of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the second largest subject of Russia. It is located in the very center of Russia on the interfluve of the small river Kacha and the great Yenisei. Founded in 1628 by the Cossacks under the command of the voivode Andrei Dubensky, the prison was originally called Krasny Yar. Krasnoyarsk received city status in 1690, when Siberia was finally annexed to Russia. In 1822 it became the center of the Yenisei province.
The city is distinguished by unique landscapes, mountain landscapes, a mighty Siberian forest and the famous Stolby nature reserve. This creation of nature is an exotic rocky elevation in the taiga in the spurs of the Eastern Sayan Mountains. The territory of the reserve is 47,000 hectares.
Today Krasnoyarsk is a modern industrial city with unique architecture, the capital of artisans and talented people of Siberia, one of the most beautiful cities in the country. The population as of January 1, 2021 was 1,093,628.
The location of the city on the Yenisei River, which is a major transport artery, makes it a gateway to the world market through the Northern Sea Route for several regions of Central Siberia.
The position of Krasnoyarsk at the intersection of existing and prospective intercontinental rail, road, air and water transport routes makes it possible for the city to develop as the largest transport center connecting European countries with the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, North America and South Asia, the North Atlantic and the northern part of the Pacific Ocean.
The proximity of Krasnoyarsk (compared to the cities of the European part of the country and Western Siberia) to Japan, China, South Korea and other countries of the dynamically developing Asia-Pacific region creates an opportunity for active growth of the economy and other areas of the city's life based on the expansion of foreign economic activity and cooperation.
Krasnoyarsk is gradually increasing its demographic, economic, investment and scientific potential. The city has historically developed a multi-industry structure of the economy. Along with the traditional manufacturing sectors for the region: metallurgy, energy, mechanical engineering, the construction industry, the service industry, education and healthcare, the production of ideas and technologies, including in the social sphere, are developing more and more actively, which allow the city to maintain its leading position and develop its investment attraction.
As of June 1, 2020, 77.3 thousand business entities were registered in Krasnoyarsk, of which more than 44.1 thousand legal entities, 32.7 thousand individual entrepreneurs.
Krasnoyarsk is often mentioned in the leading Russian ratings.
According to the assessment of the quality of life in 38 cities of Russia at the end of 2017, conducted by the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, Krasnoyarsk took 9th place. Cities were assessed on the basis of sociological surveys on such parameters of city life as the quality of medical care, the condition of roads, the work of the traffic police and public transport, culture and education, housing, the work of city authorities, and migratory moods.
At the end of 2017, Krasnoyarsk took 7th place in the top 10 rating of Russian megacities according to Expert Media Holding and Russian Reporter magazine, as well as 10th place in the ranking of the largest cities in the country in terms of housing affordability index and 2nd place among million-plus cities according to CYANOGEN.
