L-Bank is a government office and investment bank that is interested in biotechnology and semiconductors. The firm was founded in 1998 in Karlsruhe, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, and operates in the European Union.
The L-Bank (full name: Landeskreditbank Baden-Württemberg - promotional bank) is the State Development Institute of the State of Baden-Württemberg and a German credit institution in the legal form of an institution under public law with its headquarters in Karlsruhe and a branch in Stuttgart.
The bank is interested in companies that develop online media sources, cloud storage services, SaaS and marketing systems, semiconductors, thermo-electronics, and immunotherapeutic cancer treatments. The firm invests during venture, Series A, and initial coin offering rounds with companies such as Svper, Onventis, and BrandMaker.
The legal predecessor of the L-Bank is the former Landeskreditbank Baden-Württemberg, whose promotional part was transferred to the newly established L-Bank with effect from 1 December 1998. The former Landeskreditbank Baden-Württemberg was founded in 1972 by the Württembergische Wohnungskreditanstalt in Stuttgart (founded in 1924) with the Badische Landeskreditanstalt für Wohnungsbau in Karlsruhe (founded in 1934).
It is the promotional bank of the state of Baden-Württemberg. Its main tasks include the promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises, the promotion of housing, infrastructure and families with children (e.g. parental allowance and education support). It does not compete with banks and savings banks, but actively cooperates with them in the development of financing solutions.
It also operates several technology parks in Baden-Württemberg through subsidiaries, including the Stuttgart Engineering Park (STEP) in Stuttgart-Vaihingen, the Technology Park Karlsruhe (TPK), the Technology Park Tübingen-Reutlingen (TTR) and the Technology Park Mannheim (TPMA).Total assets as at 31 December 2017 amounted to 70.7 billion euros. The L-Bank ranked 17th in the list of the largest banks in Germany. The bank employs 1,241 people.
In a ranking of the safest banks in the world from the year 2017, the L-Bank takes fourth place. The rating agencies Moody's and Standard & Poor's rated the L-Bank with their best rating of Aaa or AAA.
