Lanxess is a specialty chemical company manufacturing and marketing chemical intermediates, additives, specialty chemicals and plastics that is headquartered in Cologne, Germany and was spun-off from Bayer AG's chemical and polymer business divisions in July 2004. The companies products include: advanced industrial intermediates, urethane systems, high performance materials, inorganic pigments, leather, liquid purification technologies, lubricant additives business, material protection products, polymer additives, rein chemie, and saltigo.
On April 21, 2017 Lanxess acquired Chemtura, a company making flame retardant and lubricant additives, for €2.4 billion. Lanxess plans on integrating the urethane and organometallics businesses of Chemtura, and absorbing 2,500 Chemtura employees working in 11 countries at 20 locations. Matthias Zachert, Chairman of the Board of Management of Lanxess, made the following comments after the successful acquisition of Chemtura by Lanxess:
The acquisition of Chemtura is another major step in our realignment process and a significant milestone in our course of growth. The ‘new’ LANXESS is increasingly taking shape. The expansion of the additives business gives LANXESS an additional strong pillar. In its new set-up and with an even more balanced portfolio, the company will be much more stable and profitable. At the same time, Chemtura considerably strengthens our presence in the North American growth region. We will now focus our energy on rapidly and smoothly integrating the new businesses and employees, as well as on optimally serving our new and existing customers
On February 8, 2018 Lanxess acquired Solvay, a phosphorus chemical business, for an undisclosed amount of money. The general manager of Lanxess' Additives BU, Anno Borkowsky, told reporters the company purchased Solvay to expand the companies business in mid-sized markets found within North America:
With this acquisition, we are benefiting from a North American platform for phosphorus-based speciality chemicals – a key component of our additives business – and are able to further drive our growth in this key region.
