LearnVest is a Northwestern Mutual program acquisition that aims to make financial planning more accessible. The original company was founded in 2009 by Alexa von Tobel and was headquartered in New York before being acquired by Northwestern Mutual in 2015.
The platform had multiple services aimed at helping consumers manage their money and improve their finance management behavior. LearnVest offered their platform tools via web application and an iOS store app.
The Money Center tool allowed users to track spending, visualize their budgets, and set financial goals. The built-in budgeting system also had goal tracking and showed users' trends and analysis related to their spending habits. A live view of users' accounts let customers share their dashboard with a LearnVest financial planner.
LearnVest Planning was a subsidiary of LearnVest, which employed Certified Financial Partners to offer portfolio management and recommendations and general investing advice for users.
LearnVest was acquired by Northwestern Mutual in 2015 for a reported sum of USD$250 million. The program was discontinued in May 2018, and founder Alexa von Tobel left the company in January 2019.
Prior to acquisition, LearnVest went through multiple funding rounds, starting with a $1.1 million round in 2009. Accel was the main investor for the financial planning platform, leading LearnVest's Series A, B, C and D funding rounds.
