Leonid Andreyev (21 August 1871 - 12 September 1919) was a Russian playwright, writer, journalist and poet. He was born in Oryol and later died in Repino, Saint Petersburg. Andreyev obtained his education at Moscow State University and held citizenship in the Russian Empire.
During his career, Leonid Andreyev used the pseudonyms James Lynch, Л.— ев, and Л.-- ев. He was the father of Daniil Andreyev, who was also a writer. Among his notable works is the story "The Seven Who Were Hanged".
