Linus Pauling was born on February 28, 1901, in Portland, Oregon. He is best known as a chemist, physicist, biochemist, activist shareholder, and Esperantist. Pauling also founded the field of Orthomolecular medicine. He was educated at the California Institute of Technology and Oregon State University.
Throughout his illustrious career, Pauling received several awards, such as the 1954 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the 1962 Nobel Peace Prize, the Lenin Peace Prize, and the Guggenheim Fellowship.
During his time at Caltech, Pauling had an impressive list of doctoral students, including Martin Karplus, William Lipscomb, Matthew Meselson, Arthur Pardee, Leonard Lerman, Edgar Bright Wilson, John Beach, Kurt Martin, David Harker (Citizens Advice), Lawrence O. Brockway, and David Shoemaker. His doctoral advisor was Roscoe G. Dickinson.
Pauling's contributions to science include the development of the "alpha sheet" concept. He passed away on August 18, 1994, in Big Sur, California.
