Canadian mathematician
Louis Nirenberg was born on February 28, 1925, in Hamilton, Ontario. He held Canadian citizenship and worked as a mathematician. Nirenberg received his education from McGill University, New York University, and Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. His doctoral advisor was James J. Stoker.
Throughout his career, Nirenberg supervised several doctoral students, including Kenneth Burke, Hossein Tehrani, Sergiu Klainerman, Peter B. Gilkey, Djairo Guedes de Figueiredo, Martin Schechter (mathematician), and Walter Craig (mathematician).
He resided in the United States and passed away on January 26, 2020, in New York City. Nirenberg was recognized for his contributions to the field of mathematics, receiving the prestigious 2015 Abel Prize.
