Maithra Raghu is a British-American computer scientist who works on machine learning and artificial intelligence. Her research develops techniques to understand artificial neural networks, using them to inform machine learning design and human-AI collaboration. She was part of the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2019. She is a Research Scientist at Google Brain. list in 2019. She is a Research Scientist at Google Brain.
Raghu did her high school education in London. She was part of the UK national team for the China Girls Mathematical Olympiad in 2010, where she won a bronze medal. She completed her BA and Masters in mathematics at the University of Cambridge (Trinity College). Raghu then pursued a PhD in computer science at Cornell University, advised by Jon Kleinberg.
Raghu's research has studied frameworks for human-AI collaboration in decision-making, with a focus on medical applications. With Jon Kleinberg, Sendhil Mullainathan and Robert Kleinberg, she designed AI systems that could predict doctor disagreements and assist in providing a medical second opinion. For this work, Raghu was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 in Science, and a STAT Wunderkind.
