Marcel Mauss (born 10 May 1872 in Épinal and died 10 February 1950 in Paris) was a French anthropologist, philosopher, politician, and professor. He held citizenship in France and received his education at the University of Bordeaux.
Mauss was a student of Émile Durkheim, a prominent sociologist, and served as his doctoral advisor. In turn, Mauss mentored André Leroi-Gourhan, who became a notable anthropologist and archaeologist.
