Maria Manuela, Princess of Portugal, was born on October 15, 1527, in Coimbra, Portugal. She was the eldest daughter and second child of King John III of Portugal and his wife Catherine of Austria. Maria Manuela held the titles of Princess of Asturias, Duchess of Milan, and heir presumptive to the Portuguese throne between 1527 and 1535.
As a queen consort, Maria Manuela was the first wife of the future Philip II of Spain. She was also a princess by occupation. Apart from her father, John III of Portugal, her mother was Catherine of Austria, Queen of Portugal. Maria Manuela was a citizen of Portugal and held Portuguese nationality.
Maria Manuela and Philip II had one child together, Carlos, Prince of Asturias. She passed away on August 22, 1545, in Valladolid.
