Overview

Matt Bellamy is an English musician, singer, songwriter, and producer. He is primarily known for being the frontman and lead singer, guitarist, pianist, and primary songwriter for the British rock band Muse. Bellamy is known for his eccentric stage persona and lyrics that focus on themes of world events, the apocalypse, technology, and fascination with conspiracy theories.

Early life

Bellamy was born Matthew James Bellamy on June 9, 1978, in Cambridge, England. Bellamy's father, George Bellamy, was the rhythm guitarist for the 1960s English rock group The Tornados, the first British band to have a number one hit in the United States, with the song "Telstar." Bellamy's mother, Marilyn, was originally from Belfast and met his father after she migrated to England in the 1970s. Bellamy also has an older brother, Paul.

In the mid-1980s, Bellamy and his family moved to Teignmouth, Devon, where he attended Teignmouth Community College.

Music career

Bellamy began playing music soon after moving to Teignmouth, where he met his future Muse bandmates, bassist Chris Wolstenholme and drummer Dominic Howard. The trio formed the first iteration of the band when they were around thirteen years old, cycling through the band names Gothic Plague, Fixed Penalty, and Rocket Baby Dolls. by 1997, Bellamy and his bandmates settled on the name Muse and released their self-titled debut EP. Their debut album, Showbiz, followed in 1999 and was met with acclaim from fans as it went platinum and peaked in the UK Top 30. Bellamy has gone on to release nine studio albums with the band, the most recent being 2022's Will of the People. In addition to his work with Muse, Bellamy released a solo album, Cryosleep, in 2021 for Record Store Day.
