Matt Groening (born Matthew Abram Groening on February 15, 1954) is an American cartoonist, animator, screenwriter, writer, artist, actor, journalist, executive producer, television producer, film producer, comics artist, and author. He was born in Portland, Oregon, and holds United States citizenship. Groening is best known as the creator of the animated television series , which first aired in 1989.
Throughout his career, Matt Groening has created numerous iconic characters, including Homer Simpson, Marge Simpson, Bart Simpson, Lisa Simpson, and Maggie Simpson. In addition to his work on , Groening also created the animated series , which introduced viewers to characters such as Philip J. Fry, Leela, and Professor Farnsworth.
Groening attended Lincoln High School in Portland, Oregon, as well as Don Bosco in Buenos Aires and Mary Help of Christians. He founded The Curiosity Company, a production company specializing in animation.
