Matthias W. Baldwin (born December 10, 1795) was an American engineer and entrepreneur, known for founding Baldwin Locomotive Works, a major American manufacturer of steam locomotives. He was born in Elizabeth Township, New Jersey and held citizenship in the United States. Baldwin passed away in Philadelphia on September 7, 1866.
In recognition of his contributions to the field of engineering, Baldwin was posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2005.
