Maurice Wilkes was a computer scientist, engineer, physicist, professor, and mathematician from the United Kingdom. He was born on June 26, 1913, in Dudley and passed away on November 29, 2010, in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire.
Wilkes received his education at St John's College, Cambridge, King Edward VI College, Stourbridge, and the University of Cambridge. His notable work includes the development of the Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator (EDSAC), which was an early British computer. Wilkes was guided by his doctoral advisor, J. A. Ratcliffe, and mentored several doctoral students, such as Michael Howard Kay, Peter Wegner, Ian Leslie, Beatrice Worsley, and David Hartley.
In recognition of his contributions to the field of computer science, Maurice Wilkes was awarded the 1967 Turing Award. His work and influence have left a lasting impact on the development of computer science in the United Kingdom.
