Public award medal "N. V. Gogol” was established in 2009 to mark the bicentenary of the birth of Nikolai Gogol. The medal is awarded to citizens of the Russian Federation for outstanding achievements in the development of Russian culture and citizens of the CIS, Baltic States, Georgia and far abroad countries for supporting the Russian language in the near and far abroad and merits in the development of Russian culture.
The founders were the Non-Profit Partnership "Non-Governmental Innovation Center" (NP NIC) and the International Council for Public Awards.
The award commission is formed by NP SIC and consists of no more than five people. Organizations of culture and art, educational institutions of culture and art, creative unions have the right to nominate candidates.
Since 2011, it has been awarded at the annual International Forum "Humanitarian Industries" (originally the forum was called "Popular Literature and Modern Society").
