Michael Freedman (born April 21, 1951) is a mathematician and physicist from the United States. He was born in Los Angeles, California, to Benedict Freedman and Nancy Freedman. Freedman has been awarded the prestigious 1986 Fields Medal for his notable work on the Poincaré conjecture.
Freedman was educated at Palisades Charter High School, Princeton University, and the University of California, Berkeley. His doctoral advisor was mathematician William Browder, and one of his doctoral students is Ian Agol.
In addition to his accomplishments in mathematics and physics, Michael Freedman is also the CTO and founder of Timescale, a database company.
