Morgenthaler Ventures is a private equity and venture capital firm based in Cleveland, Ohio. The firm was founded in 1968 by David T. Morgenthaler. It invests primarily in information technology and life sciences. The company made early investments in major technology companies such as Apple and Verifone.
After announcing a ninth fund in 2008, the firm split itself into information technology and life sciences divisions. Each division would raise individual funds that would still be managed under the umbrella of Morgenthaler Ventures.
The information technology division was first to closed its fund, called Canvas Ventures, in 2013 at $175 million. In 2016, Canvas Ventures announced that had closed its second fund at $200 million.
The life sciences division closed its first fund, called Lightstone Ventures, valued at $172 million. Lightstone announced in 2017 that it has closed its second fund at $250 million.
