Murray Gell-Mann was born on September 15, 1929, in Manhattan, New York. He was a citizen of the United States and a physicist by occupation. Gell-Mann studied at Yale University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as at Yale College and Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School.
He was a doctoral student under the supervision of Victor Weisskopf. Gell-Mann had several prominent doctoral students himself, including Kenneth G. Wilson, Sidney Coleman, and James Hartle. Over his career, he advised many other students as well.
Murray Gell-Mann received the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work in particle physics. He passed away on May 24, 2019, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
