National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is a government agency that conducts and support research into allergies and infectious diseases. The current agency was founded and organized under the National Institutes of Health in 1948. The research NIAID conducts is used to develop therapies, diagnostics tests, medical technologies, and vaccines. The agency's organizational stated goal is to improve the public health of the United States through a better understand the human immune system. In recent years, their mission has expanded to research treatment responses to bioterrorism threats and epidemic level chronic diseases, like childhood asthma.
The NIAID receives funding from the United States Congress under the Public Health Services Act, title IV, section 301. The agency's budget for the fiscal year 2020 was $5,523,324,000. The agency also receives financial support from private donors.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the director NIAID, Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., became an adviser to the president of the United States. The organization also conducted studies on the virus and how to detect it as well as collaborated with other entities to develop a vaccine.
