Sustainable Bioproducts is a biotechnology company growing edible proteins that is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois that was founded in 2016 by Thomas Jonas, Yuval Avniel, and Mathew Strongin. The companies technology emerged out of research into extremophile organisms living in Yellowstone National Park's volcanic springs. The companies CEO and founder, Thomas Jonas, commented on how Sustainable Biosciences started with research taking place in Yellowstone by saying:
Curiosity and a passion for exploration led us to Yellowstone, one of the harshest ecosystems in the world. By observing how life optimises the use of resources in this challenging environment, we have invented a way to make protein that is radically more efficient and gentler on our planet.
Sustainable Bioproducts works with several research partners which include: NASA, the United States Environmental Protection Agency, NSF, and the USDA.
On February 4, 2019 Sustainable Bioproducts completed their series A funding round with $33 million in funding from 1955 Capital (lead investor), Lauder Partners, ADM Ventures, Danone Manifesto Ventures, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, and the Liebelson family.
