Neuroloom is a company developing a biological connector to facilitate the image from a digital camera to be plugged into the retina. Founded in 2017 by Benjamin Paul a neuroscientist and bio-engineer the company is based in London. Neuroloom's research aims to restore sight to blind patients, enabling clinicians to revolutionize neurostimulation therapies.
Neuroloom uses living electrodes to interface with the brain. Individual nerve cells are grown in microscopic needles to allow electrical signals to be sent directly to the nerve cells within the retina. Existing technologies struggle to overcome the trade-off between the lifetime of the solution due to scarring and immuno-rejection and the fidelity of the interface. Neuroloom's approach aims to overcome this using breakthroughs in photon-scale polymeric 3D printing techniques and insights from developmental neurobiology to create adaptors for the brain.
On June 25, 2018, Neurloom won the 2018 Panacea Stars Accelerator award receiving £100K of non-dilutive funding for the business.
