Nicolaas Bloembergen

Nicolaas Bloembergen was a physicist born on March 11, 1920, in Dordrecht, Netherlands . He held dual citizenship in the United States and the Kingdom of the Netherlands . Bloembergen received his education at Leiden University , Utrecht University , and Harvard University .

Edward Mills Purcell was his doctoral advisor, and Bloembergen advised doctoral students such as Eli Yablonovitch , Peter Pershan , and Yuen-Ron Shen . In his career, he was awarded the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physics . Bloembergen's life came to an end on September 5, 2017, in Tucson, Arizona .
