A nonprofit, or not-for-profit, organization is an organization who's primary drive is not monetary. A nonprofit organization generates income through its activities, or through charitable donations, and uses any surplus of capital to invest back into achieving the organizations vision. A simple explanation of what nonprofit organizations do is to think of them engaging in activities as if they were normal people doing things that are not profit seeking, such as painting, cleaning their room, or volunteering at a homeless shelter.
Nonprofit organizations typically dedicate themselves to promoting a certain world view or to furthering a specific social cause. Examples of nonprofit organizations include: The Salvation Army, The American Legion, YMCA, Boy Scouts of America, AARP, Habitat for Humanity, Mozilla Foundation, and the National Rifle Association (NRA).
