Norske Skog aims to further diversify its operations and continue its transformation into a growing and high margin business through a range of promising fibre projects.
The Group has approximately 2,300 employees in five countries, is headquartered in Norway and listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange under the ticker NSKOG.
Our goal is to deliver sustainable products to our customers and good return for shareholders. To reach these objectives, the company has opted to be a low-cost producer, pursue sustainable growth and focus on its core business; newsprint and magazine paper.
All operations at Norske Skog are based on three core values: openness, honesty and cooperation. Its success builds on cooperation between different cultures and values.
Being able to document responsible business practices based on our values, policies and guidelines is important for a global company like Norske Skog.
We are concerned to ensure living and viable forests. All wood used in our production comes from sustainable forestry. Our sustainable forest management standards have been developed jointly by leading environmental and recreational organisations, forest owner associations and representatives of the paper industry. This shows that the development is sustainable. Recovered paper is an important fibre source for Norske Skog.
Our mills work continuously to reduce emissions and discharges. At Norske Skog, we believe that industry must participate actively in the process to control climate change. Together with other international companies, we have made a commitment to ensuring that industry contributes to the process of putting a global, long-term, market based emissions reduction framework in place. Our product lifecycle provides unique opportunities to curb climate change. Our main raw material, wood, is a renewable resource. Sustainably managed forests act as carbon sinks as they absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and store it as carbon in the wood. This carbon is further stored in our products that can be recycled many times, and at the end of their life cycle they can be used to generate bioenergy
Our group has been a pioneer in setting a global standard for social responsibility and worker-management relations. We were the first international paper manufacturer to sign an agreement with the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers’ Unions (ICEM) and the Norwegian United Federation of Trade Unions concerning employee rights on a global basis. We were also an early adopter of the 10 principles in the UN Global Compact. Through our development programme for managers and employees, the whole organisation is being familiarised with the values, ethical standards and good business conduct on which we build our business.
At Norske Skog, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact through sustainable operations and continuous improvement. To achieve this, we make sure that our environmental management programs and standards are an integral part of all our activities.
We take responsibility for following the principles of sustainable development. As well, we strive to continuously improve our environmental performance. Our mills set annual targets for key environmental performance indicators, and report their performance every month.
We ensure that our fibre raw material originates from forests that are managed in a way that retains productivity and biodiversity. We continuously work to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions through efficient use of energy and using alternative energy sources.
All our mills operate in accordance with relevant legislation and statutory requirements, of course. But we try to do more. In most cases, we set stricter standards for our activities than national or local governments.
We use externally verified standards (e.g. ISO 14001) to ensure that our management and wood purchasing systems help us to achieve our goals and targets.
As you explore the environmental section of our website, you'll find many cases of Norske Skog's commitment to a sustainable future.
