OKD, or "the Origin community distribution of Kubernetes that powers Red Hat OpenShift," is the community distribution of Kubernetes optimized for continuous application development and multi-tenant deployment.
Kubernetes, also known as K8s, is an open-source system for automating the deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications. Red Hat is a provider of enterprise open-source solutions, using a community-powered approach to deliver high-performing Linux, cloud, container, and Kubernetes technologies.
OKD adds developer and operations-centric tools on top of Kubernetes to enable rapid application development, easy deployment and scaling, and long-term lifecycle maintenance for small and large teams. OKD is also referred to as Origin in GitHub and in the documentation because the product was originally called Origin. OKD aims to make launching Kubernetes on any cloud or bare metal easy, simplify running and updating clusters, and provide tools to help containerized applications succeed.
In April 2012, Red Hat first released Origin as the open-source upstream project of OpenShift. The initial OpenShift Origin 1.0 Release was in June 2015. On August 3, 2018, Red Hat renamed the OpenShift Origin project to OKD: the Origin community distribution of Kubernetes that powers Red Hat OpenShift.
