The Oakland Roots Soccer Club was founded in 2018 by a group of Oakland natives. The club played its first season in 2019 in the National Independent Soccer Association, a Division III-sanctioned United States Soccer Federation professional league. On May 9, 2019, the club announced its head coach, Paul Bravo. Bravo was a former MLS Player and Technical Director of the Colorado Rapids. In 2021, the Roots announced a new head coach, Juan Guerra, a former Venezuelan coach and player.
The Oakland Roots play on land originally inhabited by Ohlone peoples, or indigenous groups, in the Bay Area. The club plays at Laney College Football Stadium and trains at the College of Alameda in the Peralta Community College District, along with their clubhouse and secondary training facility Bladium Sports & Fitness Club.
The club has four supporter groups—Roots Radicals, La Brigado Del Pueblo, Oakland 68s, and Homegrown Hooligans.
On May 24, 2022, Oakland Roots SC announced its women's team, the Oakland Soul, to debut in the spring of 2023.
