Ocean Hugger Foods making a plant-based raw tuna substitute, called Ahimi, out of a mixture of 5 ingredients: tomatoes, filtered water, soy sauce, sesame oil, and sugar. James Corwell founded Ocean Hugger Foods in 2015 in New York City, New York. Ocean Hugger Foods made their plant-based raw tuna substitute, Ahimi, to resemble ahi (Yellowfin) tuna. The company claims Ahimi is indistinguishable from ahi tuna in both texture and appearance. The founder of Ocean Hugger Foods, and former classically trained chef James Corwell, identified the umami taste of ahi tuna the most critical aspect to replicate in his companies plant-based tuna alternative Ahimi.
On October 16, 2015 Ocean Hugger Foods closed out their venture funding round raising an undisclosed amount of funding from New Crop Capital.
Ocean Hugger Foods and Aramark announced their partnership on March 21, 2018. The partnership will integrate plant-based products made by Ocean Hugger Foods into food services Aramark offers to college campuses and corporate business cafes.
In November, 2017 Whole Foods became the first company to partner with Ocean Hugger Foods. Whole Foods offers Ocean Hugger Foods plant-based yellowfin tuna substitute (Ahimi) at their sushi bars.
