Founded in 2013, by Harvard University graduate Naren Shaam, the objective was to be able to search trains, buses, flights and auto in one search. He was inspired to do this when he went on a backpacking trip to Europe, where he faces difficulties when planning his trip due to the lack of an aggregated search engine for transportation options across Europe.
By Summer 2013 a beta version went live in Germany, by January 2014 they had expanded to the United Kingdom and Spain. In mid January the company announced a multi-million round of funding by Lakestar. The company is headquartered in Berlin, Germany.
The start-up launched in May 2013 after announcing $4m in seed funding from Hasso Plattner Ventures and Battery Ventures. On December 9, 2015, Omio announced its $45m in Series B funding led by Goldman Sachs. This funding will be used to expand its presence in Europe beyond its 11 European countries, to improve the product and further grow the team. With a Series D amassing $150 million in October 2018, Omio has managed to collect $296 million in total funding.
