ABOUT THE OVERWATCH LEAGUE :
The Overwatch League™ is an international esports league comprising 20 city-based teams and featuring the best Overwatch® players in the world. The 2022 season, which features new Overwatch 2 PvP gameplay, begins May 5 and concludes with the playoffs and Grand Finals later in the year. Showcasing top-tier competition, thrilling storylines, an enhanced prize pool, robust viewership rewards, and cutting-edge production value, the Overwatch League is the world's premier esports league.
2022 SEASON FORMAT :
Regular-season play will be structured in four tournament cycles: the Kickoff Clash, Midseason Madness, Summer Showdown, and Countdown Cup. Teams will play six qualifier matches each cycle to determine seeding for each of the culminating tournaments. The Kickoff Clash and Summer Showdown will be regional competitions, the Midseason Madness tournament is planned to be a global live event, and the Countdown Cup will serve as the play-in tournament for the postseason, which is also scheduled to be a global live event.
Teams will be divided into two groups based on their location this season: East and West. The East will consist of 7 teams, with the remaining 13 in the West. Regular-season qualifier matches and tournament qualification will be based on competition within each group.
STANDINGS AND LEAGUE POINTS :
Qualification for tournaments and for the 2022 playoffs will be based on each team’s total League Points. Teams can earn League Points through their performance in qualifier matches and tournaments. Teams get 1 League Point for each qualifier match win and for appearing in a tournament. During tournaments, there are additional points at stake: The second-place team at each regional tournament will receive 2 total League Points, while the tournament champions will receive 3 total League Points.
At the Midseason Madness Global Tournament will, the third-place team will receive 2 total League Points, the second-place team 3 total League Points, and the champions 4 total League Points.
2022 PRIZE POOL :
The midseason and postseason tournaments will both feature a hefty prize pool of at least US $1 million.
