Pernell Whitaker was born on January 2, 1964, in Norfolk, Virginia . He was an American boxer who competed professionally from 1984 to 2001. Whitaker was a citizen of the United States and was educated at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia . He was nicknamed "Sweet Pea" and also known as Pernell Whitaker Sr.
Whitaker's parents were Raymond Whitaker Sr. and Novella. He had a brother, Raymond Jr., and a sister, Monique. Pernell Whitaker had five children: Dominique, Pernell Jr., Dantavious, Devon, and Tiara.
Throughout his career, Pernell Whitaker held numerous boxing titles and awards. He was the U.S. lightweight champion in 1982, NABF lightweight champion from March to October 1987, USBA lightweight champion from July to September 1987, and IBF lightweight champion from February 1989 to February 1992. Whitaker held other titles like the WBC lightweight champion, The Ring lightweight champion, WBA lightweight champion, undisputed lightweight champion, IBF junior welterweight champion, WBC welterweight champion, and WBA super welterweight champion. He was also named The Ring Pound for Pound #1 boxer during September 10, 1993, to April 12, 1997.
