Pharoah Sanders (born October 13, 1940) is an American jazz musician, composer, and bandleader native to Little Rock, Arkansas. Sanders holds US citizenship and is known for his exceptional saxophone playing. He has received multiple Grammy Awards throughout his career.
Sanders developed his skills as a saxophonist at various educational institutions, including Scipio Jones High School, Oakland Junior College, and North Little Rock High School. His style is distinct, as it often involves overblowing, harmonic, and multiphonic techniques on the saxophone, combined with "sheets of sound".
Known for his work within the jazz and free jazz genres, Sanders has released over 30 albums as a leader. Additionally, he has collaborated with notable artists such as Leon Thomas and Alice Coltrane. Saxophonist Ornette Coleman once described Sanders as "probably the best tenor player in the world".
Apart from his work as a saxophonist, Sanders is also a musician, composer, and bandleader.
